Granite is an exceptional material for counter surfaces. It’s extremely durable, non-porous, available in colors to fit any design, and universally (and naturally) beautiful.

I’ve always been partial to natural products because of the unique variations in each piece. Like a fingerprint, no two bits of natural materials are going to be identical. This goes for wood, stone, and even semi-man-made items like clay tiles.

Granite has always been one of my favorites. The range of available colors is astounding (as-is the corresponding range of prices since granite is a natural stone and price is based on rarity and source location). Various options for finishing, thickness, and custom edges complete the mix of choices allowing for total personalization of your kitchen.

While searching for granite ideas, I found a UK based site called Wren Kitchens where I learned that I have been calling my kitchen surfaces by the wrong name all this time. They are Worktops, not counters or countertops… oops. Who knew?

I did our first kitchen in granite before it became popular (and more affordable) over fifteen years ago and the counters looked exactly the same when we moved out of that house after more than ten years of daily use. Cutting directly on the counter, setting hot items on the counter, spills, whatever. It took it.
Maybe that’s why it should be called a Worktop… it works.
