Incredible spaces don’t just happen. They’re created the same way anything else is… one piece at a time.
I love to study pictures of breathtaking environments to see how many of the “parts” I can find. The result is a list of little things you or I can do in our own homes right now, today!
Even though the above picture isn’t really something I can duplicate for myself in the short-term plan (so sad, I know), it is something I can be inspired by. So can you.

1. Let in the light! – While this isn’t always practical or even possible, if you do have a window in your bathroom try to let the light come in. Natural light is hard to beat.
2. Pleated Awning Ceiling Treatment – The fabric “awning” type shade on the ceiling is a crazy cool design idea even for those of us whithout the glass skylight to go with it. You can cover a flourescent fixture with something like this Image may be NSFW.

or on a section of boring ceiling you could add a few LED ceiling mounted lights behind it to create an illusion of natural light.
3. Nothing Beats Flowers! – These flowers look fresh to me, but they may very well be artificial. Either way the look is bright, inviting, and sensual.
The problem here is the cost! If you have a source for cheap fresh flowers, I’d love to hear it.
4. Custom In-Wall Niche – The built-in wood niches in these walls look great and really aren’t very hard to build. In fact, I posted some drawings awhile back that might get you going – Easy In Wall Niche Plans

5. Mix Old and New, Smooth and Rough – The little vintage coffee table is a perfect complement to the smooth and new surfaces in the rest of the room. I see these kind of little things all the time and pass them by because we don’t know where to put them.
6. Cool Robe/Towel Hooks – It’s amazing what a tiny piece of hardware can do for an empty bit of wall. Personally, I think I’d leave the robe hanging there even when not in use. (Though I would want a white robe myself, I’m just sayin)

7. Tunes! – When I was a kid I had a shower radio that hung on the showerhead pipe (called the “shower arm”, fyi). Now I settle for the measly sound my cell phone puts out. Uh! Why would I do that? Every bathroom should have great sounds. I found the stereo above, also at Amazon.com

8. Mix Wall Finishes – Similar to item number five above, the simple act of using more than one wall finish in a room creates a visual interest that few other architectural details can match. Often this also serves a functional purpose such as in bathrooms with tile walls halfway up. In this case, the distinctive wall finishes work together with the floor (see #10) to create a visual separation in an otherwise open room. The effect is almost as-if the tub is in a different room. Cool.

9. Put a Shelf at Floor Level – I love this idea. The shelves in this room are thick which is a great feature in its own right, but the design impact of putting the lower shelf right at floor level is awesome. If you don’t think so, close your eyes and imagine the same photo without the lower shelf. I’d put a picture of my dogs on it. I think they’d appreciate that.

10. Mix wood floor color and direction – This is something you don’t see that often but when you do it always looks cool. Both of the sections of this room have very similar flooring material (probably exactly the same manufacturer and style). The only difference is color. The difference is further accentuated by alternating the direction. Along with the wall finish/color difference in idea #8 above this creates the illusion of two distinct rooms.
11. Thick, Natural Counter Surface – What more can I say? The counter isn’t very visible in this photo, but from the peek you do get you can tell it’s amazing. Probably concrete, but possibly natural stone slabs wrapped on a thick structure, the effect is perfect. I love the way the thick shelves and the thick counters work together. I also like the natural wood legs. I wish I could see more of this part of the bathroom.
12. As shown in the second photo at the top of this post, the icing on the cake is a picture of Remodeling Guy next to the tub – Damn Paparazzi. I have no idea how they got that one.
