High End Furniture Look on a DIY Budget

Getting a beautiful new piece of furniture for your home is a wonderful feeling isn’t it? It had been quite awhile since I’d felt it… I forgot how exhilarating it is!

Thanks to Sauder Woodworking I recently enjoyed the experience with a beautiful new entertainment credenza to replace the cute but too small little hutch upon which rested our 32″ TV. (I know, the TV is too small too! I agree with you, I totally need a bigger one.)

For most of the ten years we’ve had our beachy little cottage by the harbor in Punta Gorda, FL, we’ve also had a place a couple of hours north in Tampa. While that probably sounds nice, I really don’t love it. It could be great, possibly, if money were no object. Then you would never think about the expense of two places and you would readily spend thousands upon thousands of dollars making each place exactly as you want it.

But we don’t live that kind of life. Money is definitely a consideration and we’ve always had to furnish our places on a very tight budget. So I’ve used my carpentry skills to do built-ins and I’ve become quite adept at putting together “Ready to Assemble” kind of furniture.

Ordering on Sauder.com

Armed with the confidence that no self-assembled bit of furniture was beyond my abilities, I eagerly pored over the Sauder.com website in the hunt for something new and useful for our home. I already knew about Sauder’s vast and varied selection which I was introduced to when I wrote about doing a Vintage Eclectic Kitchen on a Budget.

After looking around the site and browsing the wonderful selection while thinking about our various furnishing needs, Kim and I decided on the Entertainment Credenza from the Original Cottage Collection, in the sunshiney Melon Yellow finish. The website price is just over two-hundred bucks which seemed like a good deal at the time but morphed into a crazy amazing deal when we saw the finished piece.

Ordering on Sauder.com was painless and straightforward and about a week later UPS brought a big box right to our door. It really was a pretty big box… you need a large space to assemble this such as an open area of floor (carpet would be best). Since our floor is all tile, I decided to put it together on our giant farmhouse table. (made by me, of course!)

DIY Assembly

This was no small assembly project and it took a solid two hours for Jacob and I to tackle it. But that’s all it took… I wonder how long it would have taken for me to go to the store, pick something out, load it up and get it home? Or if I had it delivered add in the time required to coordinate and meet the delivery truck, and the added cost. Truth be told, I probably came out ahead of the game with a two-hour time investment.

If you take your time and follow the instructions methodically, assembly is painless. It’s when you start jumping around and skipping steps that things fall apart. If that happens, I’m told that Sauder has a great customer service team of real experts, but I didn’t need to call them. Assembly went smoothly.

Here’s the thing that really surprised me…this does NOT look like a cheap piece of furniture. This is nice. And it’s also not hiding behind a “contemporary minimalist” design style. This really is an interesting, cottage-ey, detailed unit complete with fancy drawer fronts, raised trim on the top edge, and flat panel ends with raised bottom rails.

Loving It!

The painted finish is beautiful and the color worked out perfect for us. Very fitting to our beach cottage decor.

We finished it off with a couple of wicker baskets and filled the drawers with our stuff, taking full advantage of the storage space which is always sorely needed in a small house. The TV fits easily and looks much better. I even have room now for a bigger one. Image may be NSFW.

:-)

We’re really just thrilled with this new addition to our home and every time I sit down in the evening to watch a show I look at it and marvel over the fact that you can buy this for just over $200 ! I’m telling you what… it looks like something much more expensive than that for sure.

That’s the kind of home furnishing I like to brag about!
