Yesterday was one of those days. You know the ones. Those rare days when you do a “little” project around the house that makes a huge difference. One of those little investments that changes things so much that you just can’t believe you didn’t do it sooner.
Yesterday, I switched out my porch light from a standard fixture to a new Revolve™ Floodlight from Eaton®. It brightened my life immediately!
In less time than it takes to eat a decent lunch I increased my home security, reduced energy costs substantially, and made my outdoor space significantly more usable at night! Win, win, win…
Here’s the project and the results I experienced.
First, let me show you the results in terms of brightness! Wow! These pictures were taken from the same exact spot without a flash, using the same camera.
Revolve™ Series LED Security Floodlight from Eaton®
The light I installed is the “Triple Head” version, which includes three separate LED lights facing in three directions. There is so much awesomeness here I don’t know where to start.
Installation on Corners
If you’re installing on a corner, this triple bulb setup blows away the “yesterday’s news” double flood light for obvious reasons. You can aim a light down each side of the house and a third toward the corner.
Aiming is accomplished using the simple little aiming tool which is included in the box. Just insert and turn and you’re good to go.
Eave Installation Along a Flat Wall
I installed my fixture near a corner, but not quite there. The light works great along a flat wall! Right out of the box, the lamps were already aimed as you would expect, one along the wall in each direction and one pointing straight out away from the house.
One thing that surprised me was the amount of light that “spills” around the corner. Maybe I’m easily amused but the concepts of reflected light and indirect light always kind of turn me on!
Note: You can also install both the triple light and the double light version of the Revolve™ fixtures ON the wall. So if your house happens to have wall mount options only, no problem, the amiable nature of the precision optics on these fixtures makes that doable.
Low Profile Design
I really like the low-profile design of my new fixture. Compared with a standard incandescent floodlight this is much less obtrusive. For a wall mount situation or an eave, like mine, that isn’t very high this could be a huge deal!
Motion Activated or Dusk to Dawn
The Revolve™ floodlights are available in either a motion activated version, which is what I installed, or a photocell activated Dusk to Dawn version which stays on all night.
The motion activated version has easy-access controls for adjusting both the sensitivity of the motion activation (so every squirrel doesn’t turn the light on) and the duration the light stays on.
Outdoor Living on Top of Security
The most obvious benefit of flood lights is security, but oftentimes these lights are also a huge boon to your outdoor living options. As you can see from my photos, the nighttime visibility on my deck has increased dramatically.
Installation Tips
This was a super-simple project. If you’ve ever changed a light fixture or a fan, you know it’s not rocket science. The most important thing, of course, is to be sure the power is turned off at the breaker or fuse box. Turning off the switch only is NOT a great idea and does not guarantee you won’t get zapped.
Once the power is off it’s a simple matter of removing the old fixture and any mounting hardware it might have had. You want to get down to the fixture mount junction box.
The instructions included in the box for installation are straightforward. You connect the wiring pigtail, then the mounting bracket, then the fixture mounts to the bracket. Easy Peasy.
LED Outdoor Floodlights are a Quick Project with Big Benefits
Overall I ended up feeling pretty accomplished! It didn’t take long and the difference made was remarkable.
I’m not really sure yet which of the many benefits of Eaton’s new Revolve LED Floodlight will be my favorite in the long run, because both security and cost savings matter to me. But for now, the increased visibility in my backyard at night is just so nice I can’t get over it. The dogs are pretty happy about it too I think!
