One thing I’ve learned about blogging is that the strangest things wake-up these little remodeling ideas that 20+ years in construction has firmly embedded in my mind.
Remodeling an entry door, for example. It’s not something I often thing about, but it’s something that just about everyone who lives in a building can do. This is one of the few remodeling projects that can be inexpensive enough you would even undertake it on a place you rent!
I wasn’t really thinking about front doors until I got an email from people on the marketing team for a UK based hardware, fixtures, and furnishings site called IronmongeryDirect.co.uk They’re trying to get the word out online about the site and they thought maybe I’d be interested in helping the cause.
Little did they know that hardware happens to be one of my hottest hot-buttons so once I clicked through to the site, well, I stayed a little while. The first item on their menu got my attention because it used the very British terminilogy “Door Furniture“. What it means in American English is “mega blingage for your door”.

1. A Lockset with a Back Plate
Most standard entry sets today use a small round plate to cover the holes in the door. Especially lever or knob designs (vs. the ones with the pull handle and the thumb-latch).
It’s easy to add a bit of fit-and-finish by selecting a new handleset that comes with a back plate and nice matching screws.
If I wasn’t trying to limit my post to just five ideas, I’d probably go on for a few minutes about how awesome this wide lever is! I can see that looking great on a one-light glass door (a single French door).
2. Add A Mail Slot

So look, I’ll admit that I’ve never lived anyplace where the letter carrier actually carried the letters! In my experience, they drive up to a mailbox in their little truck and let their right arm do the vast majority of the work. In fact, where I live, if there is even a car parked in front of the mailbox you can forget it. But I digress…
Just because the mailman won’t actually use it does NOT mean that a traditional mail-slot in your door doesn’t add a nice visual touch. And if you happen to live somewhere they might actually use it, even better.
3. Install A Kick Plate
This is one of those basic tips that cost just a few dollars but makes a major impact on curb appeal!
It takes only a few minutes, simple tools, and very basic skills to install a kickplate on your door. The large surface of polished brass, chrome, or antique brass is going to add an element of visual interest that nothing else can do quite as easily.
And they also work! Ever have your hands full and need to push the door open with your shoe?

5. Paint or Refinish!
I know this doesn’t really fall under my overall concept of door hardware, but it’s really one of the simplest and most effective exterior remodeling projects around.
Paint the Front Door
I’m a fan of doors in red and blue myself, but I also like a very nice natural finished wood door too. Once again, a picture is worth a thousand words:
